„Caries? NO THANKS“ – Your prophylactic programme

caries - NO Thanks

The two-step concept is interesting for everyone who is prepared to assume the responsibility for his/her own health.
Because nobody will be more committed to take care of our well-being than us.

Step I: Highly-effective caries prophylaxis suitable for everyday life

This prophylactic programme which you should start immediately, is one of the best ones and consists of measures that are internationally tested and verified by studies. By following it, it is possible to conserve healthy teeth and healthy gums for life.

BUT: You have to do it – daily and lifelong

  1. Brush your teeth twice daily, in the morning and in the evening, gently but thouroughly(!). Use dental floss or interdental space brushes if necessary.

  2. Chew a dental care gum containing 100% of Xylitol (Zahnzucker) directly after every meal or snack. In particular during the day, when brushing your teeth is not possible. Why Xylitol?

  3. Reduce your sugar intake if possible, by consciously abstaining from sugar-containing foods and drinks. Instead, favour the sugar substitute tooth sugar (Xylitol) to sweeten your meals and drinks and choose sweets like lozenges and gummy bears containing Xylitol (Zahnzucker).

  4. After consuming acidic foods or drinks like fruit, juices, many sports and energy drinks, sodas, wine or salads with vinegar dressing, wait approx. one hour and don’t brush until then. These fruit or vinegar acids have the same effect as caries and soften the dental enamel. Compare dental erosion

  5. You should schedule an appointment with your dentist every 6 months, to check and if necessary, to get professional cleaning. If you are prone to caries, get your teeth sealed with gel or varnish.

The caries risk is reduced by more than 80% - this means: only every fifth person is affected again.

Step II: Basic restoration – if necessary

The goal is a one-time basic restoration of your teeth, if desired in half-sleep or under general anaesthesia. This is because existing damages of the teeth, like holes caused by caries, missing teeth or parodontitis, can not even be repaired by the best prophylaxis. In addition, these dental inflammations frequently cause other health problems like heart trouble, back pain or skin eczemas.

Advantage for phobic patients: When applied daily, this concept is especially suitable for phobic patients, because only this one-time complete restoration has to be done. Any further visit to the dentist with "healthy teeth" subsequently loses its terrifying effect.

Causes of caries

Our dental cavity is populated by more than 300 different types of bacteria, most of which are useful or even digestive. However, caries bacteria (such as streptococcus mutans) are also among them. Within short time – approx. 24 hours – they form a strongly adherent tooth deposit (plaque) on the teeth’s surfaces. These microorganisms can produce damaging acids from carbohydrate-containing foods, preferably sugar. If this acid environment exists inside the mouth for a certain period of time, demineralisation of the enamel occurs. So-called initial caries develops. If counteractions take place in an adequate and timely manner, our body eliminates this initial caries without permanent damages (remineralisation). However, if there is already a hole (cavity), the dentist has to remove the carious material and fill the tooth.

Alimentation

Many studies prove that sugar damages the dental health. A tooth-friendly alimentation should thus completely avoid sugar wherever possible. However, this is very difficult because sugar is not only found in chocolate, cake and other sweets. Sugar also hides in many finished products where nobody would expect it. These so-called “hidden sugars” are found in: delicatessen salads like chicken salad or coleslaw, cereal, yoghurt or many drinks like energy and sports drinks.

"sugar-free" on foods doesn’t necessarily mean without sugar

Many finished products are called something like "sugar-free" or "no added sugar". This only means that these products don’t contain table sugar, cane sugar or beet sugar. However, sugar is also found in many other ingredients, e.g.:

  1. Apfelsüße,
  2. Dextrin,
  3. Dextrose,
  4. Dicksaft,
  5. Fruchtextrakt,
  6. Fruchtpüree,
  7. Fruchtsaftkonzentrate,
  8. Fruchtsüße,
  9. Fruktose,
  10. Fruktose-Glukose-Sirup,
  11. Fruktose-Sirup,
  12. Gerstenmalz,
  13. Gerstenmalzextrakt,
  14. Getrocknete Früchte,
  15. Getrockneter Glukosesirup,
  16. Glukose,
  17. Glukose-Fruktose-Sirup,
  18. Glukosesirup,
  19. Honig,
  20. Inulin,
  21. Joghurtpulver,
  22. Karamellsirup,
  23. Konzentrierte Fruchtsäfte,
  24. Laktose,
  25. Magermilchpulver,
  26. Maltose,
  27. Malzextrakt,
  28. Molkenerzeugnis,
  29. Molkenpulver,
  30. Oligofruktose,
  31. Oligofruktosesirup,
  32. Polydextrose,
  33. Raffinose,
  34. Saccharose,
  35. Süssmolkenpulver,
  36. Traubensüße,
  37. Vollmilchpulver,
  38. Weizendextrin und ...

Why so many different names for sugar which caries bacteria (streptococcus mutans) virtually love to produce acid?

Our saliva protects

The salivation after the meals performs several important protective tasks. Food remains still sticking to the teeth are flushed away by increased salivation, and at the same time acids are neutralised. In a neutral environment, the mineral nutrients calcium and phosphate contained in saliva can be re-incorporated into the tooth. The dentist calls this remineralisation which repairs light damages in initial stages. This is because caries bacteria produce tooth-damaging acids with the available food remains, and thus reduce the pH-value inside the mouth which in turn intensifies this negative cycle. The motto ‘a lot helps a lot’ is exactly right here, because the more salive the better. Chewing tooth-friendly gums containing Xylitol is best because it combines a lot of saliva with the anti-cariogenic sugar substitute Xylitol. International studies prove that caries is reduced by up to 80 percent.
